On October 31, Halloween comes to an end. Costumes and pumpkins soon leave the streets. Then red poppies become a noticeable symbol on many coats.

Canadians wear them to remember those who served in war. The flower stands for respect and loss. It brings a serious mood to the season. [3]

The shift may seem sudden, but the poppy campaign starts before November. In 2026, it runs from October 24 to November 11. [1]

The Royal Canadian Legion gives out poppies. It also asks for donations to help veterans and their families. No one has to wear one. [1]

Many people pin the flower near their heart. This small gesture can show thanks and gratitude without a word. [2]

November 11 is Remembrance Day. At 11 a.m., many people pause for two minutes. They honour those who died in war. [4]

For newcomers, this change after Halloween may be new. The red poppy helps tell a part of Canada’s story.
