✓ Reviewed by Brando

Conversation questions and speaking activities for adults learning English. Use them for self-study, online tutoring or classroom discussion.

Part 1: Food Opinions Worth Arguing About

Defend strong food opinions, rank everyday favorites, and settle some completely unnecessary debates.

  1. What is the best form of potato: fries, hash browns, mashed potatoes, or tater tots? Defend your champion.
  2. Sweet or salty popcorn? Which side are you on, and how strongly do you feel about it?
  3. What is the weirdest food combination that you secretly swear by, or one you would genuinely try?
  4. Which popular food is the most overrated, and what would you choose instead?
  5. Would you rather give up pizza forever or give up burgers forever?
  6. You have to convince a room full of people that one unpopular food is actually excellent. Which food do you defend?
  7. Hot take: breakfast food is better at night than in the morning. Agree or disagree?
  8. Two friends are arguing about whether pineapple belongs on pizza. What fair test should they use to settle it?
  9. Would you rather eat perfect fries with no sauce or average fries with unlimited sauces?
  10. Choose one food opinion you would defend even if everyone else in the room disagreed with you.

Part 2: Fix It, Ruin It, or Invent It

Create ridiculous foods, improve classics, and argue about where good taste ends and food chaos begins.

  1. Take a food you already like and add one unexpected ingredient that might actually improve it. What do you choose?
  2. Which ruins food faster: too much sauce, too much cheese, too much spice, or making it soggy?
  3. Would you rather try chocolate-covered pickles or cheese-flavored ice cream?
  4. Why do some strange food combinations sound terrible but taste surprisingly good?
  5. Invent a new national fast-food item that could realistically become popular. What is it?
  6. Hot take: adding cheese improves almost every savory food. How far are you willing to defend that statement?
  7. A restaurant wants attention online and plans to create one ridiculous menu item. What should it make without becoming completely disgusting?
  8. Would you rather eat an amazing meal that looks terrible or a beautiful meal that tastes only average?
  9. Design the worst pizza that is still technically edible. What goes on it?
  10. Pitch your strangest food creation to your partner and convince them to take the first bite.
